Downtown Abbey Daisy Inspired Tam in Tangerine

Did you already have a chance to check out my Downton Abbey Brown Daisy tam? I really like it. But I didn't think it was enough like Daisy's tam. I made another pass at it and made it slouchier. I think it's much better this time.

It's definitely big enough to hold all of my hair in it if I wanted to. The bright color is fun (but probably much too bright for Daisy!). I like that this can be worn in spring and maybe into summer as the cotton won't retain heat in the same way as acrylic does.

Here is how it's done:

I used a cotton yarn such as Lily Sugar and Cream and an H hook. I did not measure gauge.

Begin with a magic ring and chain 3. Work 9 DC into ring. Connect ring with a sl at top of chain 3. (10 stitches)

Chain 3. DC into same stitch opening. Work 2 DC into next stitch. Repeat all the way around and connect round with sl at top of chain 3. (20 stitches)

Chain 3. Work 2 DC into next space then 1 DC into next space (alternating 2 DC and 1 DC). Repeat all the way around and connect ring with a sl at top of chain 3. (30 stitches)

Chain 3. Work 1 DC into next space and 2 DC into next space. 1 DC into next 2 spaces and 2 DC into next space (alternating a 2 DC for every two 1 DC).  Close ring with a sl at top of chain 3. (40 stitches)

Chain 3. Work 1 DC into next two spaces and 2 DC into next space. 1 DC into next 3 spaces and 2 DC into next space (alternating a 2 DC for every three 1 DC).  Close ring with a sl at top of chain 3.   (50 stitches)

Chain 3. Work 1 DC into next three space and 2 DC into next space. 1 DC into next 4 spaces and 2 DC into next space (alternating a 2 DC for every four 1 DC).  Close ring with a sl at top of chain 3.   (60 stitches)

Chain 3. Work 1 DC into next four space and 2 DC into next space. 1 DC into next 5 spaces and 2 DC into next space (alternating a 2 DC for every five 1 DC).  Close ring with a sl at top of chain 3.   (70 stitches)

Chain 3. Work 1 DC into next five space and 2 DC into next space. 1 DC into next 6 spaces and 2 DC into next space (alternating a 2 DC for every six 1 DC).  Close ring with a sl at top of chain 3.   (80 stitches)

Chain 3. Work 1 DC into each space. Close ring with a sl at top of chain 3. (80 stitches)

Repeat next 5 rows.

Chain 3. Work 1 DC into next 4 spaces. DC next two stitches tog. Work 1 DC next 5 stitches and DC next two stitches tog. Repeat all the way around. Close ring with a sl at top of chain 3. (60 stitches)

Chain 3. Work 1 DC into next stitch. DC next two stitches tog. Work 1 DC into next 2 stitches and DC next two stitches together. Repeat all the way around. Close ring with a sl at top of chain 3. (53 stitches)

Chain 3. Work one DC into each stitch. Close ring with a sl at top of chain 3 (53 stitches)

Chain 2. SC into each stitch. Close ring with a sl at top of chain 2. (53 stitches) Finish off and weave end in.

I haven't yet tested this pattern, if someone does I would love a comment on how it works.

Daisy (Downton Abbey) Inspired Tam

I'd never before heard of a beret referred to as a tam. But I like it. So, tam it is. This tam was inspired by a cute dusty burgundy (is that even a color?) that Daisy wore on the last episode (aired in the US. I know, you Brits are way ahead of us).

I have been seriously loving 20's inspired hats for a while now and I didn't quite know why. Now that I am caught up with season 3 of Downton Abbey (I know, I need to go back and watch the first two), well, who can blame me?  The downstairs girls' hats are so much easier to figure out how to crochet....I need to work on some crocheted versions of the fancier upstairs hats!

I love this tam, don't you? Here is my version of it. The yarn is 100% cotton, brown yarn. I still need to write down my pattern. Lucky for me, its easy!
Its smaller than Daisy's hat. It fits closer to the head, not so slouchy. And I think its freaking ADORABLE!

Crocheted Berets

Do you follow me on Pinterest? I have a bunch of crochet projects pinned there for my own future reference. I have a few favorite patterns and this is definitely one of them. The original pattern comes out like a vintage style beret, not at all what the photo with the pattern looks like. But....I actually like it! And I am not a huge fan of 80s vintage. I had also made a wicked looking tan and pink camo beret but, silly me, I totally handed it to my sister ( it looks FABULOUS on her too! ) without thinking to take any photos. Good thing I still have more camo yarn!

Another installment to beret week! This next one is 100% cashmere. CASHMERE, ya'all! Oh, I love cashmere. So soft. I think I've said it before, it's like wearing a hug.

Of course I would prefer wrapping him around me all day but we all know that's not going to happen . . . . .

Okay, back to the beret. It was a huge sweater, a men's super-double-extra-large or something like that. I have so much left over cashmere from this one ( CASHMERE, ya'all! ).

I recently saw a Nate Berkus rerun where they were doing a segment of designer clothing and the inexpensive option modeled together. Remember that one? Anyway, she sewed buttons on to the waistband of a skirt to mimic the designer style. Ha! Clever. Those two little buttons sure did up the style quotient of that skirt. So I did the same here. Two vintage buttons on the band. Designer! Whoo!

Set of Two Blue Berets With Flower Detail

Next installment of beret week. I really do find these projects to be so satisfying. They don't take an impossibly long time to work them, they are very inexpensive to make (especially considering the luxurious materials used) and they can be embellished or left plain. You are only limited by what you can find in the thrift store, lol!
These next two were supposed to be adult sized except that the bottom band of the sweater wasn't that large. So I changed them up into child sized hats (think grade school children). I left the circle the same size as the adult so these might have just a tiny bit more flop to them. I *might* have a kid to try these on later, we'll see. She might be too big already. And I'm not sure her little brother would be too keen on wearing a floral beret for me.

This sweater was 100% cotton and was a men's sweater. Solid blue with a stripe across the chest.
This beret below is solid colored, no stripe incorporated.

For the flower I used a long piece of scrap and cut it so that one end would be wider than the other. I folded it in half and used a running stitch through the bottom. Pulled it tight and wrapped it into this flower, the narrow end in the front middle and stitched it together.. Anchored it with a button and stitched right to the hat.

Here is the striped version. I made the stripe asymmetrical, running across the right side of the hat, when worn. I attached the flower to this side to call attention to the stripe. It makes me think of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow :)

I would love to see these on twins, sisters or best friends. Wouldn't they be adorable? Gawd, if I had a third one, I could try to borrow the triplets who live across the street from me. Hmmmmm . . . .(rubs chin)

Toddler Beret

Okay, I might as well call this beret week, hmmmmm? Did you see my teal beret from yesterday? This is the matching toddler version. I expect that this will fit children 1 year to about 3 years old. I might have a real baby I can try this on tomorrow. If so, there will be more photos :)


I thought this ribbon detail anchored with a reclaimed button was just sweet enough.

This knit "twist" is the original front of the sweater. Pretty adorable on this little beret too.

Teal Beret with Embroidered Flower

This beret began as a Talbot's sweater. I was really undecided on whether I should cut it up as originally intended or try to sell it on Ebay. Its cute enough, used to be my size (lol!) and was made of 97% wool and 3% cashmere. Such a pretty sweater. Awww, what the hell, I cut it. I couldn't be happier with the results! One adult sized beret and one toddler size, soft and colorful. And if I play it right, I could end up with leg warmers or boot socks too!

This one is the teen/adult size. Love how flexible the stretchy band is :)

I freestyle embroidered the flower on using a back stitch. And layered the buttons for contrast. The bottom button is brass colored and came from a denim dress. This teal button was perfect! I don't remember what it came from but it was all alone, no matchies.

This beret is so soft and luxurious. I can imagine that I would never wear it, just hold it and pet it all day.
