Crocheted Edge Denim Cut Off Lace Shorts

Does that title make sense to you? I am trying to improve my search ranking, lol!

Okay, let's see a virtual show of hands. Who knows how to crochet a lace edge? Aaaand who knows how to do basic embroidery? Aaaand, who likes these cut off shorts?

I gained inspiration for these from a few places. First, I love all of the lacy dolphin tail cut offs that have been floating out there in Pinterest-land since last year. Second, I love the vintage style crocheted edge on pillowcases, also seen out there in Pinterest-land lately. Why not combine the two?

Cute, right? I included a bit of a dolphin tail in the cut of the leg.

Since I rarely photograph myself making stuff I will just tell you how to do this.

  1. Cut the legs from your shorts. Save the legs 'cuz there are oodles of things you can do with denim. Or just send them to me. I can't get enough of them!
  2. Head to your sewing machine. Do not fold a hem if you like the tattered look. Use a fairly small zig zag stitch above the cut, maybe 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch. Not too far. Sew all the way around each leg.
  3. Thread an embroidery needle with size 10 cotton crochet thread, in the color of your choice (haha, obviously!). Here is where embroidery skills come in. Do a back stitch all around each leg, immediately above your zig zag stitches, about 1/4 inch or a little shorter per stitch. You want to be able to crochet into these stitches using a size E or F crochet hook. (If you turned your hem, use a blanket stitch here instead)
  4. Using a size E or F crochet hook, single stitch into your back stitches, inside of the leg, all the way around. Remember to start from the inside so that your frayed edge still shows.
  5. Crochet the edge pattern of your choice. Here is what I did: in first sc, HDC, DC, HDC, sl into next two sc, repeat all the way around. Fasten off, cut a long-ish tail and use your embroidery needle to weave end in.
  6. Wash your shorts. This will tatter the edge of the denim and it will relax the crocheted edge, softening it.

So what do you think?

Vintage Bohemie Fashions!

Wow, is it windy here! California is taking some pounding winds today. It sounds like thunder claps when it gusts. You know this Gemini is happy, hehe.

I've been perusing current fashions on Wanelo and Pinterest today (when I should be working or cleaning house or something...) and I am so tickled that styles I grew up with are appearing on the younger set today!
For example, I graduated high school in 1987. Okay, I know I just dated myself. I wore a prairie style soft denim button up dress with a lace hem. Haha, no one was wearing these! Until the next year. Then EVERYONE was. I am so excited that the prairie style is back!! I pinned some of my favorites on my Pinterest. All photo captions link back to seller.

Now, let me take you a bit further back. All of my older cousins were wearing these back in the 1970s.

I'm diggin' those cut offs too.

This one just makes me think of Woodstock. Of course, even I was too young for this. Love this photo too!!!!!

Oh, and this one is completely current. But so cute! I love skull fashions right now.

Aren't these fun?

Hunger Games Embroidery

Hey, all, I did this last year after I saw the first Hunger Games movie. I made fast work of the printed trilogy but not before I embroidered this on to a vintage denim jacket.

I CAN'T WAIT for the second movie! May the odds ever be in your favor :)

Embroidered Flamingo Blouse #2

I loved my pink flamingo blouse so much that I did it again! This time on a mint green blouse. Same flamingo drawing but this time I did the birds in pink!

I just love how the bend of the necks replicate a heart.....

Here is the front of the blouse....a Banana Republic fitted blouse in stretch cotton, XL.

Loving the look of these blouses with cut-offs. Bet it would look really, really good with fitted, boot cut jeans.

Embroidered Flamingo Blouse

How is everyone? My laptop seems to be taking a dump lately. Hoping its just a bad battery. I was thinking about maybe replacing it with a Blackberry Playbook. Does anyone else have a BB Playbook? Thoughts?

Anyway, here is the actual post. I have had flamingos on the mind lately. I even got me one of those plastic flamingos for my yard :-D. I figured I had to put a flamingo on a blouse (or two!). I drew this design out then traced it in pencil on to the blouse. A few stitches and a few hours later I have this:

Embroidered flamingos

Because the blouse is already such a great pink, I did the flamingos in black. I think it gives the blouse a retro 50's vibe.

Embroidered flamingos

The blouse itself is an adorable stretch cotton Club "Z" Collection brand in a size 2X. I love the 3/4 length sleeves and the styling. It even has a little pocket on the sleeve.

Embroidered flamingos

As you can see, I would wear this with cut-off jeans. I'm sure it would be adorbs over capris or a pencil skirt.....

And that fake-o Katniss braid really pulls it together, right? LOL!

What's the Haps?

I seriously have not had time to sit at my computer in several days now. Facebook, I miss you! Some of it was planned, like yesterday and Sunday. Some of it was not planned due to urgent visits to the doctor. No computer time also means no time for any projects. I still do not have but a couple of minutes of computer time today, just enough to squeak out this little post to let you know that I haven't disappeared. And to be able to share what cool planned stuff has been keeping me so busy.

My son had his prom this past Friday. I had nothing to do with these cool outfits, it was Jackie's aunt that did it all. She is so talented and clever with steampunk details, something that I couldn't do. I love the steampunk look, I am just at a loss as to how to achieve it. For me, its like my ability to do math. I know its simple and I just don't get it.....

Steampunk prom

We took a road trip to Redding, California to see the total annular eclipse. This photo below shows how the sunlight dimmed. It was rather like a cloud cover but without the clouds.

Kids enjoying the eclipse

I went to Golf and Guitars in Sacramento, California yesterday. We got to meet all of the country music acts and some of them are definitely more playful than others. We didn't roll back into town until 2:30 this morning.

Chuck Wicks

I got to meet Kix Brooks. People loved him but I thought he was a little patronizing. He actually said "that's okay, you're just nervous" when I realized that I didn't hand my camera to my friend for this shot (we were looking for it). Ya, okay, I was spaced but I wasn't nervous. Whatev.....

Kix Brooks

This next guy, Nick Hoffman, is seriously charming. Very nice guy.

So, here you have it. I will post more about the prom outfits because they are seriously impressive, more about the solar eclipse because that was just cool and I have yet another blog that gets some love every so often and the Golf and Guitars photos will go there. And I will definitely get busy on some new embroidery. After I get through today.....

Capri Embroidery Upcycle ~ Tutorial

~ Update ~  As I was linking this post to the many parties "I may or may not contribute to" ( as seen on the right sidebar ) I realized that I am linking up a clothing project to a lot of decor websites. This tutorial is also relevant for tablecloths, slip covers, towels, blankets and quilts, pretty much anything that needs a punch. You are only limited by your own imagination!

As promised ~

I have this cute, colorful pair of capris that I picked up at a garage sale a few weeks ago. The capris look new and colorful bottoms are in style right now. I figured, why not decorate them a bit, right?

Remember seeing this dress? I used some of this fabric for the trim.

Super awesome 70s dress!

Use whatever trim you want, at any width you want. Really, its your project :)  My pieces began as two inches wide. I cut them long and trimmed the excess after it was stitched on. You can, and probably should, pin the edges under but this fabric folded and stayed pretty well. And, I always stab my fingers. So I left the pins out and simply folded the fabric as I went along.

Embroidered capris

I did a split stitch all the way around on the top and the bottom. As a southpaw, I do my split stitch a bit different. Do you see the position of the needle in the photo below? I stabbed the needle halfway back into the previous stitch. I included a video on the right handed way of doing a split stitch. Do whatever is most comfortable for you and gives you the best results.

Embroidered capris

Once I was finished and ready to cut the thread, I cut it several inches long, split the six threads in half so I had three threads on each side I tied the strings, looping the threads double instead of single and pulled it until the knot was just even to the fabric. Any tighter and the stitches will pucker. Tie again twice (regular) for a nice, tight knot and cut.

Embroidered capris

Nice and close so as to reduce tickles to the wearer.

Embroidered capris

I made some french knots randomly through the middle of the fabric. Maybe 8 to 10 knots on each leg. Begin by wrapping the thread twice around the bottom half of the needle. Keep it fairly taught.

Embroidered capris

Poke your needle into the fabric. Using your other hand (mine was holding the camera here), keep some tension on the thread to keep the loops in place on the needle.

Embroidered capris

Carefully pull the thread all the way through and you will have a pretty french knot.

Embroidered capris

There are lots of great tutorials on how to do a french knot. Here is one, the technique is the same whether you are right or left handed. Southpaws just have to switch sides . . . . .

I did think that the upper half of the capris needed to be tied in to the bottom now, for balance. I used the same thread and did a back stitch under the opening of the front pockets. Stab your fabric with the needle like shown, all the way through. Pull your thread through . . . .

Embroidered capris

Then stab the needle into the hole where the last stitch completed. Similar to my southpaw split stitches except you are not going into the last stitch. They're just sharing holes.

Embroidered capris

Here is the finished product.

My Kodak shoot spot is going through its seasonal changes. Off in the distance are hay bales. The foreground shows rows of hay drying, before being baled. Its hard to imagine why hay prices remain so high when there is such a bounty here in my town.

Embroidery on Yellow Blouse

The inspiration ~

Flower draped Mustang

Well, no, not really the mustang. Just flowers. And spring colors.

The embroidery ~ This was a blouse I found at a garage sale recently. I love the frayed hem and collar. And the color!

Do you see the embroidered detail next to the buttons? I love this shirt! It was fun to make.

On a sad (for me) note, as I was writing this I found out that one of my favorite bands, The Dirt Drifters, broke up. Say it ain't so, guys!!!!!

:-(  Major sad face.
